Born and raised in Oakville, Ontario, Joel received an early education in the music business from his father, Jack, a prominent figure in the careers of many including Ella Fitzgerald, Oscar Peterson, Hank Snow, Wilf Carter, the Guess Who and Dan Hill to name a few.
In the early eighties Joel signed his first songwriting contract with CBS Songs and begun writing songs for scores of recording artists. Along with songwriting, Joel quickly became one of the top session vocalists in Canada for hundreds of radio and television commercials as well as background vocals for such diverse artists as Bruce Cockburn, Triumph, Pure Prarie League, Steve Winwood, Jimmy Rankin, Air Supply, Véronique Béliveau, Billy Newton Davis, David Clayton Thomas, Ian Tyson and Gordon Lightfoot among others. In 1985 Joel produced his first artist (along with production partner Tim Thorney). Thus would begin a long and storied production path that still serves him well today.
The success of Joel’s first artist album, ‘Joel Feeney & Western Front’, led to Joel signing a worldwide recording deal with MCA Records Canada. Joel hit the road in 1992 & 1993 touring his record and somehow found time to write and demo songs for his follow-up. Los Angeles songwriter / producer and long time friend Chris Farren (Deanna Carter, Aaron Lines, the Warren Brothers) was brought on to produce the new record. This was the first time that Joel would travel to Nashville and begin a year and a half long run of writing and recording 1993’s ‘Life is But a Dream’. The new record would go on to have six singles released and Joel had his first number one single with ‘What Kind of Man’. A newly-signed staff writing position with Chrysalis Music in Los Angeles and more touring would push his profile that much higher as Joel was featured on many TV show and live stages. He also did background work on Rita MacNeil’s CBC television variety show ‘Rita and Friends’ working on the show’s post production vocal work.
Along with success as a recording artist, Joel’s career as songwriter and producer has flourished, working with Nashville legend Steve Wariner, Manitoba’s ‘Doc Walker’, Leann Rimes, Misty Lee Olsen, After Tuesday, Jason Greeley and from Kentucky Josh Osborne.
